Our Journey

The Beginning

Re-Cycle Bristol was founded by Frank Colzie in 2010. It started from his passion for collecting and restoring discarded bicycles for resale. Empowered by positive customer feedback and demand for his services, Frank approached The Prince's Trust, and was awarded a £250 grant to test his business idea.

Early Growth & Funding

Frank used the initial grant to buy inventory, which was quickly turned into over £1,000 in profit. These funds enabled Frank to complete his Advanced Bicycle Mechanic training in London. After a glimpse of the demand, Frank pitched his idea to a panel of Prince's Trust Trustees, and was awarded a grant of £2,000 to start his business. Re-Cycle Bristol was born!

Success

Re-Cycle Bristol was a success story right from the start, winning the South West Business Awards in 2011. The bikes were reasonably priced, but serviced to an exceptional standard. Frank placed customer service at the forefront of his business strategy, building thoughtful solutions based on his clients' unique needs. Word of mouth spread quickly, in fact, most of Frank's business came from repeat customers who rejected pushy sales in favour of a more personal approach.

Challenges

Unfortunately, the cycle industry has changed drastically in recent years, with many established bike shops going out of business. It was at this point that Frank decided to explore ways to adapt his business. He took a break from his cycle business, and began to seek experience in other industries. Thanks to his experience in mechanical engineering, Frank secured a position at the British Red Cross as a Wheelchair Service Technician.

Evolution

To build upon a keen interest in the mobilty equipment sector, Frank secured a position at NHS Wheelchair Services as a repair technician. After gaining a wealth of knowledge about the industry and products, Frank realised the need for affordable mobility aids. This empowered Frank to make the difficult decision to leave the NHS, and pursue his idea to provide this much-needed service.

New Beginning

Upon gaining a wealth of experience and knowledge from working within wheelchair services, Frank decided to change the focus of his business from bicycles to mobility.
